Executive Producer Doesn't See Spartacus: Blood & Sand As Pornography

"The only organized group was some media watchdog group trying to ban us from coming to England. Typical far-right religious stuff -- the decay of society, blah blah blah. I was shocked at some of the reactions. Particularly calling it pornographic or soft core. Apparently the sexual revolution is dead or long forgotten. It deeply concerns me about the sex life of Americans if they think this is soft core. It's like they haven't been on the Internet in the past 10 years. It's absolutely R-rated, but it's just R-rated. I was stunned and shocked about the overzealous reaction to people having sex on TV. Somebody called it the most graphic sex ever on TV. Didn't anybody see "Tell Me You Love Me" on HBO?"

Porn accusations shock "Spartacus" producer

____________________________________________________

The above is the response executive producer, Steven S. DeKnight, of Spartacus Blood & Sand gave in an Q&A with Hollywood Reporter, James Hibberd, about the series picking up the label of being pornographic. Wow, where has he been?

Porn is porn no matter how you dress it up or dress it down, and the saying "you are what you eat" is valid in the case of Spartacus Blood & Sand. This series is littered with pornography. Let's face it. The real purpose of this series is not so much to entertain but to make money, and to do that, the series is peddling flesh upon flesh. And as far as ratings are concern Spartacus Blood & Sand has truly been mislabeled. Instead of a MA for mature adults or R for restricted, the series should unconditionally be labeled with a XXX-rating for hard-core, which is usually preserved for certain films, but the producers and creators of Spartacus wants to dish out a little "of something for everyone". Therefore, the XXX-rating is fitting.

As for the reported rise in the series weekly ratings, most likely the series is attracting people accustomed to porn, members of the gay communities, and those who have heard about or read about the series and want to know what the hype is all about.

In truth, Spartacus Blood and Sand has steadily lost viewers and while this trend has slowed down, its downward rating will probably continue with the return of the more popular and successful series this spring and summer.

Honestly, how much  frontal nudity, homosexual sex, group sex, sexual role playing and male castration can one tolerate before the true nature of the series as being pornography hits home.

In answer to De Knights touching on the sexual practices of Americans, for the majority of people in America the sexual revolution died with the rise in AIDS. Couples are staying married longer and those not married want long-term meaningful relationships. Religion, though it still places a high value on the moral and sanctification of human bonding, plays only a small part in the sexual practice decision making process (“common sense”practices) of the majority of people in America and millions do frown on and avoid pornographic media.

Spartacus: Blood & Sand, this is my final comment. I’m thoroughly done.

STARZ SERVES UP KING ARTHUR’S ROUND TABLE IN NEW ROMANTIC ADVENTURE SERIES, 'CAMELOT'

STARZ SERVES UP KING ARTHUR’S ROUND TABLE IN NEW ROMANTIC ADVENTURE SERIES, 'CAMELOT'
Academy Award® Winning Producer Graham King Turns His Focus to Television, Working With the Producers of ‘The Tudors’ to Tell This Timeless and Powerful Legendary Tale

Irish-Canadian Co-Production Is Set to Air in 2011 on Starz in the U.S.

Los Angeles/ Dublin/Toronto/London – March 22, 2010 – Starz continues to bring unique event programming to audiences in the U.S., securing rights to “Camelot,” a wholly original approach to the timeless Arthurian legend, from the creative team behind such landmark series as “The Tudors,” “Life on Mars” and “Torchwood,” as well as critically acclaimed film The Departed and upcoming The Tourist.   Originated by Academy Award® nominated Ecosse Films (Mrs. Brown, Becoming Jane Nowhere Boy,)Starz plans to air the 10-episode series in the first half of 2011.

“Camelot” will be based on Thomas Malory’s 15th century book,” Le Morte d’Arthur” – still considered the definitive work on the subject. But that’s only a starting point; “Camelot” will weave authenticity into a modern telling of the Arthur legends that is relatable to contemporary audiences.

Academy Award® winning producer Graham King (The Tourist, The Departed, Gangs of New York, The Aviator) along with Tim Headington and newly appointed GK-TV President Craig Cegielski will serve as Executive Producers.  Additional Executive Producers include Morgan O’Sullivan (The Count of Monte Cristo, The Tudors) and James Flynn of the Irish production company Octagon, Michael Hirst (The Tudors) and Douglas Rae (Nowhere Boy, Becoming Jane, The Waterhorse) of UK’s Ecosse Films.  The series is being written by Chris Chibnall (“Life on Mars,” “Torchwood”).  John Weber from Take 5 Productions will serve as the Canadian producer.

The series will be shot in Ireland, with post-production to be completed in Canada. Starz has all U.S. rights – including home entertainment and digital distribution – to “Camelot”; GK-TV will handle the rest of the world.

“`The story of Arthur isn’t history, it’s mythology, and. Camelot isn’t a place but an idea of hope that has resonated intensely at different times throughout history,” Starz, LLC, President and CEO Chris Albrecht said. “The creative team has envisioned a highly entertaining and distinctly original TV program that fits in perfectly with our lineup, coming on the heels of our successful original series ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’ and the returning comedy ‘Party Down,’ along with our recent acquisition of the event series based on Ken Follett’s ‘The Pillars of the Earth.’ ”

“GK-TV was started with the goal of producing compelling cinematic quality programming for television,” said Graham King.  “The legend of King Arthur is a fascinating story that we couldn’t be more excited to have as our first television project.”  Added Craig Cegielski, “Our goal for this project is to bring a fresh and contemporary take to one of the most classic medieval tales.  In keeping with the GK-TV vision, we have assembled top level writers and producers to help tell the universal story of Camelot on a global scale.”

“I am excited to be part of this project not only because it is an amazing story, but it allows me to collaborate once again with Chris Albrecht,” said Morgan O’Sullivan.

“Camelot is one of the greatest stories ever told and we are thrilled to be working with Starz and Graham King on such an ambitious production,” said Ecosse Films CEO Douglas Rae.

Casting is underway for the production, with the cast expected to feature fresh talent combined with established faces who will enhance the high quality of the new series. Production is slated to begin in June of this year.

Angelina Jollie Battles For Her Life As Salt!

Jolie is a proven action star after the Tomb Raider movies, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Wanted, but di Bonaventura says it wasn't as simple as changing "he" to "she" in the script."

Should Spartacus: Blood and Sand Be Banned For Its Amoral Subplots?

Hello,

Evelyn here,

A few of the gays in my area are upset with my disapproval of gay intercourse on television. Yes, I believe some of the subplots of the show Spartacus: Blood and Sand are amoral, and I would like to see it banned here in America. So remember as you seek me out,or attempt to cause me problems about town, I am a writer, a reviewer, but I am also a Christian, wife and mother and while I have nothing against gays as whole, I neither like nor need troublemakers. I have also informed Starz of the development here.

On that note, I do not need people going about town with the intent of making trouble for me because I rejected the attention of men who I do not want and who do not interest me. I mean, I am a married woman and that means something to me. May my marriage be good or bad, it is mine, and I will always respect it. Also, I feel lucky for not wanting to involve myself with the type of men who attempt to cause or allow others to cause me problems simply I do not want them and for being mature enough to trust my own judgment in such matters. So do me the favor and cut the crap!

‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand Fan Page Is No More!

Try as I might, I could not get around the offenses scenes in the first few episodes Spartacus: Blood and Sand, the Starz Original series. Although the characters and the subplot of those episodes were "killed off", one by suicide and two by murder, I have deleted my ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand Fan Page.

This doesn't mean that I am avoiding the series. On the contrary, I am still watching the series, but I am not supporting the series as a sub-domain on my personal domain, "It's A Woman's Thing Online Fan Page, will continue to write my reviews. I also understand that Europeans have different views of sex and nudity.

Finally, I have a great respect for the actors and crews of the series and have followed Lucy Lawless, Michael Hurst, and Ted Raimi for years since the end of Xena Warrior Princess and Hercules Legendary Journey, and I feel that Andy Whitfield has portrayed a strong and believable characterization of Spartacus, and I look forward to seeing him in the role for Season Two once he had recovered from his non-Hodgkin's lymphoma's treatments.

U.S. premiere of Merlin season two set for Friday, April 2nd on Syfy

U.S. TELEVISION PREMIERE OF MERLIN SECOND SEASON
ON SYFY FRIDAY, APRIL 2, AT 10PM (ET/PT)
Season One Merlin Marathon Airs on Syfy Sunday, March 28, from 10AM-11PM (ET/PT)
New York, NY – March 9, 2010 – The second season of the critically acclaimed series Merlin makes its United States television premiere on Syfy Friday, April 2, at 10PM (ET/PT), following the spring season premiere of Stargate Universe at 9PM (ET/PT).
To give viewers a chance to catch up before the new season two launch, Syfy will showcase all 13 hours of Merlin’s first season in a full day marathon Sunday, March 28, from 10AM-11PM (ET/PT).

An imaginative new twist on a timeless legend, Merlin is set in the mythical city of Camelot, before history began. It’s a fantastical realm of legendary beasts and mysterious peoples, and a dangerous world where magic has been banned by the ruthless tyrant, Uther Pendragon.

Merlin stars Colin Morgan as Merlin, Bradley James as Prince Arthur, Anthony Head as King Uther, Richard Wilson as Gaius, Katie McGrath as Morgana and Angel Coulby as Gwen.

In the season two premiere episode, new servant Cedric (Mackenzie Crook, The Office) threatens Merlin’s position as Arthur’s right-hand-man, turning the Prince against his loyal friend. Merlin is convinced the slippery newcomer is up to something and he’s right – Cedric is a con man and a thief who’s after a magnificent jewel recently unearthed in a tomb far beneath Camelot. Little does Cedric realize that his precious prize is more dangerous than he could possibly imagine.

Merlin is executive produced by Julian Murphy and Johnny Capps for Shine Television.

In February, Syfy acquired the basic cable rights from FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) for all 26 episodes of Merlin. Season One of Merlin aired on NBC (Summer 2009). Seasons one and two aired on BBC One in the UK (2008-09). BBC has commissioned a third season, which will air in the UK in September 2010.

Syfy is a media destination for imagination-based entertainment. With year round acclaimed original series, events, blockbuster movies, classic science fiction and fantasy programming, a dynamic Web site (www.Syfy.com), and a portfolio of adjacent business (Syfy Ventures), Syfy is a passport to limitless possibilities. ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’ Star Andy Whitfield Diagnosed With Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma;Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber diagnosed with prostate cancer

Starz's epic drama Spartacus: Blood and Sand halted production after star Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with cancer, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Whitfield, who plays Spartacus in the freshman series, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and is scheduled to begin treatment immediately.

Spartacus sets ratings record for Starz

"I'm receiving excellent care and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me," said Whitfield, whose cancer was detected in its early stages.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy," president and CEO of Starz Chris Albrecht said. "His health, of course, is our primary concern. He has our complete support during this difficult time."

The second season of Spartacus was scheduled to begin shooting in April in New Zealand.

LONDON -- A spokeswoman for Andrew Lloyd Webber says the composer has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The announcement came in a statement Sunday which said "the condition is in its very early stages. Andrew is now undergoing treatment and expects to be fully back at work before the end of the year."

Lloyd Webber, 61, recently announced plans for a sequel to his phenomenally successful musical "Phantom of the Opera." Called "Love Never Dies," it is scheduled to open in London's West End in March and follow on Broadway in November.

He said the sequel resulted from "unfinished business." Lloyd Webber's other musical hits have included "Cats," "Jesus Christ Superstar," and "Evita."

He was knighted in 1992 and named to Britain's House of Lords in 1997.

Legend of the Seeker Renewed for a Third Season

Fans of Legend of the Seeker! Fret not. Your beloved Seeker and his two knockout sidekicks (I mean Kahlan and Cara and not the wizardry old Zedd. Although, he will be returning also. Really, who doesn't love the old guy?) will return for a third season.

According to co-executive producer and writer, Mike Sussman at Legend of the Seeker the series has *not* been canceled, and plans are ongoing for season three. So spread the word.

It would also be a shame to lose the series now that it has really strengthen its storyline and made it more dramatic. I really care about what happening with these characters.

Well, it has come down to this, the viewers in Britain are the first to form a group and take up arms against Sam Raimi’s latest creation, Spartacus: Blood and Sand. In an article with Mediawatch-UK, an ‘outraged’ director Vivienne Pattison had the following to say about the series and TV impact on society in general.

"We can no longer ignore the fact that what viewers see on television has an impact on society. Even the Government is asking the producers of soap operas to include safe-sex messages in their programmes now. There are numerous studies linking exposure to violence on TV with violent behaviour at large and if there is the slightest possibility that explicit sex and violence on screen can cause this harm, is it worth the risk in the interests of entertainment?

Once this programme is shown on television it will be much easier for children to access, particularly via video-on-demand online services. Ofcom research shows that fewer than a third of parents use the password-protected services available to screen what their children can access."

In regards to the following articles, I applause the campaigners in Britain for fighting to Spartacus: Blood and Sand. As an American, I feel that the creators and producers of the series have misjudged the moral tolerance level of the American television viewers, and although the question of whether full-frontal nudity and homosexual sex should be allow to be seen on an television series hangs in the air, I also believe that the series will not be a long run on American’s shores.

Although, and in real life, some people, with questionable morals and motives, thought it would be fun to place some of these people of the above mentioned type in my path, it caused a bit of trouble for me and my family and in turned called for police intervention, it was and is truly a heartless and unwise thing to do and should never be repeated.
