Renfield Gets His Day …. Well, Maybe

Universal Pictures is bringing together alumni actors Nicholas
Hoult and Nicolas Cage in the comedic horror film, Renfield.

Hoult will play Renfield, who as you remember from previous films is
always portrayed
as the insanely creepy,
vermin devouring minion of Count Dracula.  However, this film will examine Renfield
in a modern day setting and his attempt at a new life with love interest Rebecca
Quincy, a traffic officer, which will be quite a feat since the monster who abandoned
him changed him into something akin to a ghoul.

Count Dracula is played by Nicolas Cage.

Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage

Additional cast in the 2023 film are Ben Schwartz, Adrian
Martinez, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Bess Rous and Awkwafina.

Chris McKay the director of Amazon’s The Tomorrow War and The
Lego Batman Movie
will also direct Renfield.

Proposed release date: April 14, 2023

Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage also starred together in the
2005 film, The Weather Man.

Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage
Correction:

There are earlier films that do not portray Renfield as a crazed
lunatic, such as in the 1922 silent film
Nosferatu:  A Symphony of Horror
by F. W. Murnau,  the 1931 film Dracula of
Tod Browning , which was  the first
talkie horror picture by Universal , and the  1931 Spanish film Dracula of George Melford. In
these films Renfield played the prominent role of Jonathan Hacker and was
intent on stopping Dracula terror on English society.

So it is possible that McKay’s Renfield will
be a hero and get the girl.

Miss, Lucy!?

That is, do you miss our favorite all-time leather cladded,
sword thrusting and chakram flinging star, Lucy Lawless as Xena, Warrior
Princess.

It is surprising that it has been twenty-one years since this
heroic female warrior of the defenseless rode across ours television screens to
right the wrongs of evil oppressors, as well those of her own.  Since the end of the Xena, Warrior Princess Series,
back in 2001, Lucy Lawless has only been seen in a few films and television series,
which were assessable to here in the US. They included Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Parks and Recreation, Spartacus: Blood
and Sand, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, Spartacus: Vengeance, Salem, Battlestar
Galactica, Veronica Mars,
and
Celebrity Duets
.

Lucy has also done quite of bit of voice work in popular
animation productions some of which are Wonder Woman in Justice League: The New Frontier, Nunchuck in Minions: The Rise of Gru, and of course her iconic role of Xena in Hercules and Xena – The Animated Movie.

All this being said; it is clear that Lucy made a lasting
impression and has been missed. However, there is good news, although not a
live action flick, Lucy can be heard in the upcoming adult animated film The Spine
of Night
as Tzod on Shudder.

The Spine of Night
is an extremely dark and violent animated horror film in which the heroes must
save a land of magic spanning more than a century and many cultures against a
malevolent power bestowed in the users of a magical plant.

The other stars joining Lucy in the film are Richard E.
Grant, Patton Oswalt, Betty Gabriel and Joe Manganiello.

The Spine of Night
will debut on Shudder on Thursday, March 24, 2022.

As for her most recent live-action work, fans can watch both
Lucy Lawless and Renee Connor in the Acorn TV
series, My Life Is Murder, just got
renewed for season 3.
