More On The Writing Process

As any writer, especially professional writer can tell you, when writing a story about science fiction, fantasy, and horror research is important. This is particularly true with theme based on or alluding to mythology and/or historical events. This type research in invaluable and can be found in libraries, books for bookstores and yes, on the internet. This latter resource is rich with information to help any writer, in the above mention genre, come alive.

I have a personal collection of books  and magazines on the subject, and when necessary, I use web material to assist me as well. The web is a wonderful resource for research material, and with my fertile imagination.  A little research material thrown in the mix is all that needed for that authentic favor of a sci-fi or fantasy story. I hope to write many stories within this genre in the years to come.

In addition, I recently incorporated some mythology and historical references within a short story written as a class assignment. It is a horror story,  and I am not surprise that word and even details of it has traveled so fast and to places even would not expected for a first draft. However, that is a good thing. At least, it is known that I am writing, and that I am indeed a Sci-Fi Queen.

Moreover, creating it was so much fun and the theme so interesting that I plan expand on it with a second story

Godspell At The Tampa Bay Performing Art Center

Having gone to see Godspell earlier this afternoon and for the first time, I have to say that I was a little disappointed. The overall production was performed very well. However, because of the high volume of the music, the lyrics were at times drowned out, and I could not understand what the performers were singing. This happened quite a bit and the lyrics seemed lost in a sea of dissonance, which made my mind wander. The classic songs "Day by Day” and “Prepare Ye - The Way of the Lord” were crisp clear exceptions.

The modern interpretation of the original 1970 musical score by John – Michael Tebelak with hip-hoppers instead of hippies was delightful, unexpected, and fun. Done in two Acts, the musical is based primarily on the Gospel of Mathew with the baptizing of Jesus by John the Baptist, and follows Jesus’ teachings of the parables, to his ultimate betrayal by Judas Iscariot and the finale with Jesus’ crucifixion. However, the parable of the Prodigal Son and of The Rich Man and Lazarus comes from the Gospel of Luke.

All in all, I truly like the production and would like to see Godspell again, but because of the dynamics of the music in the small Jaeb Theater within the Tampa Bay Performing Art Center, I will buy an older performance on DVD.

Writing As A Profession

Yea! Someone has finally answered all those annoying questions I sometimes get about why I write. It also clears up the notion about me being home alone a lot, therefore I must be lonely. I am not. In fact, I am just the opposite, and enjoying it.

This video was posted on Blackboard by my Fiction II professor.

P.S. The deadline for the first draft of my short story is Monday, but I am off to see Godspell. Would this be considered prograstination? Hmm?

Two of the Best Rated Films of thie 2010 Winter's Season, Benicio Del Toro‘s The Wolfman and Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, are Playing Now!

The new version of the old Universal film The Wolfman is a winner! The film, which stars Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins, is a fantastic upgrade of the old Universal black and white horror film that starred Lon Chaney, and this review is based on my perspective dating back to the day when I was a child lying in an oversize bed with six or more my of sibling and cousins watching the weekly late night horror film.

The horror and surprise levels in this new film is wonderful rich and had the same level of excitement and expectation as the older film and is highly satisfied. Benioc Del Torro was great as the Wolfman and viewers while knowing that Lawrence is a murdering monster, will feel some sympathy for his plight as a man bitten and cursed by a raging beast, who later in the film turns out to be ... I not telling, but viewers will enjoy an evening of good entertainment in watching this film. The Wolfman musical theme is similar to the 'BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA theme Love Song for a Vampire and composed by Wojciech Kilar, however it is the work of composer Danny Elfman. Following is a bit of the soundtrack  Wolf Suite Pt 1 .

As for rating this film, this 50-something fan and fan page webmaster rates The Wolfman (2010) five out of five stars. Although the follow NYPost review is less glowing with the reviewer rating, the companying video has enough scenes from the film to give viewers a taste of its misty 19th century atmosphere and rising drama.

An Interview With Anthony Hopkins and  Benicio Del Toro with ReelzChannel.

Then there the latest Adventure action film from the makers the Harry Potter sage, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

Having been a Harry Potter great, I must admit to losing interest in the sage after the third film and stopped going to the theater to see the newer episodes. I would watch them as they came out on cable, and I didn't think the different fantasy films (that will remain nameless here) that came out in the previous carrying the same excitement level and marketed for the dollars and not for good storylines.

However, I was pleasantly surprised and happy that staying to see the 10 P.M. showing of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. was not a mistake. I  think the film is a step up from the recent Harry Potter film and a sequel should be on order.

Below is the fan review video from ReelzChannel.  "Fan Review -  First Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

Kevin McKidd played the larger than life Poseidon and father to half-god, Percy Jackson played by Logan Lerman. I rate this film five out of five also.

“OH, NO THEY DIDN'T!” A REVIEW OF SPARTACUS: THE BLOOD AND SAND – THE THINGS IN THE PIT

02.14.2010 – Well, you cannot say I didn’t warn you. After Spartacus: Blood and Sand, The Things In The Pit, Ep. 104, aired this past Friday, quite a few viewers started rethinking the idea on what makes a good series and most definitely, what makes a bad series. Sadly, even with its name-dropping cast, Spartacus: Blood and Sand fell short of its mark of being a good series, and it didn’t fulfill many of its viewers’ expectations. Episode 104, was overly inhuman in its brutality, the things (no pun intended) that happened in the pit and the creators stretching of the notion of what is an acceptable sexual encounter for all viewers appears to be based on the “there something for everyone” idea. However, many of the scenes in the episode were not acceptable by all and were viewed as an outright exploitation of many viewers’ moral sensibilities. Setting aside the issue of morality, the creators’ initial idea appeared to be a great one but now has the potential of placing the fledging series in jeopardy of losing viewers, as well as marring the success of their other more mainstream projects, such as Legend of the Seeker.

According to Starz’ PRNewswire, in Spartacus: Blood and Sand’s premiere week, the series earned a record audience of 3.3 million viewers worldwide, and its Nielsen ratings showed that the series increased its viewership with episodes 102 and 103. However, the numbers are not out on The Things In The Pit, Ep. 104, and from what is floating around on the web if the same type of creative blunter happens in Spartacus: Blood and Sand’s future episodes, its well earned high rating will probably fall like the dropping of hot coals on a midsummer day.

This coming Friday will be the first of the series new episodes since viewing the promotional episodes back in December, which I haven’t revisiting since the series official airing, I am looking forward to seeing Spartacus: Blood and Sand next episode.  in which Batiatus is presented with a gladiatorial opportunity of a lifetime. Spartacus and Crixus must overcome their mutual hostility to fight as a team against a legendary and unbeaten opponent. USA - 2010 – TVMA.

There you have it – my unblemished review. Any comments can be posted  here.

Smallville, Supernatural, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Percy Jackson The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, The Last Airbender, And Merlin All Fantasy Greats!

Hello Everyone,

As some of you may have guessed, I am alternating the sites in which  I update each week. This is because I am back at USF working on my writer’s degree, but I have learned to balance class work with fun. This “fun” is my passion for working on my websites, and this week I have undated this site. So Enjoy.

-----
02.07.2010 – The long await remake of the University Picture’s The Wolfman, opens this Friday, February 12, nationwide. In this newest version Benicio Del Toro       plays Lawrence Talbot, who like his father Sir John Talbot Anthony Hopkins suffered from the curse of the werewolf. Hopkins role as the consoling father is all of his best creepiness.

Another fantasy film of interest and opening on the same day is Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The film is about a highschooler who learns after an attack by a teacher that has turned into a mystical creature that he is the son of Poseidon, and that he along with other half-godly of Mount Olympus must battle restore the stolen lightning bolt of Zeus.

02.07.201 - Posted the new promo preview of The Last Airbender, which air today during commercials of the Super Bowl XLIV at Dolphin Stadium in Miami.

02.07.2010 – Sadly news for American Merlin’s fans, NBC cancelled the series.

Merlin stars Colin Morgan as Merlin, Bradley James as Prince Arthur, Anthony Head as King Uther, Richard Wilson as Gaius, Katie McGrath as Morgana and Angel Coulby as Gwen.

Following is the official announcement.

02.27.2010 – Spartacus; Blood and Sand has lite up the cyber-world with glowing reviews. The first three episodes were all that the producers of the promised if not a bit too bloody, but all in all that series first three maiden episode proved to be an unforgettable adventure ride in the world of the gladiators and slaves of Rome.  Yet, beware of the moonless night of Mercury on February 12, 2010. What is this suppose to mean? Nothing, I just thought I would be a little cryptic. However, Spartacus; Blood and Sand    Spartacus: Blood and Sand Ep. 104 - The Thing In The Pit is the eye-opener of all eye opener of episodes.

02.07.2010 – Discovered a site that has really great site called the Twilight Source. The site is very informative on the doing of Twilight, its cast, and its upcoming films, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, and author Stephanie Meyer latest book in the series, Midnight Sun. Don’t look for the  first 12 unfinished chapters of her book. She rightly had them removed from the sites that posted after learning that a once trusted friend released them. Here Stephanie’s response.

Added to this: Universal has just cast the 17-year-old Twilight Saga star Taylor Lautner to play title character Stretch Armstrong based on the Hasbro toy. The studio is giving Stretch superhero powers in the new 3D franchise that is scheduled for release in 2012. Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson and Co-Chairman Donna Langley think Lautner is “the real deal” and are undaunted by all the other projects which Taylor also is launching, including the Max Steel franchise at Paramount and the 3rd and 4th installments of the Twilight Saga for Summit Entertainment, and other films.

Want to know more check out the Twilight Source.

02.07.2010 – I am simply blown away by The Vampire Dairies. The series is leaving me antsy to see the outcome of each new episode. This past Friday’s episode took us farther down into the history of the Salvatore’s brothers, Stefan and Damon, where we learn that Catherine is a soulless and blood lusting vamp that has her eyes on transforming the Salvatore’s brother into creatures of the night. Elena is also learning surprising things about herself and her birth mother, the elusive, Isobel, whose own history appearance to be linked to the handsome history teacher, Alaric Saltzman and the devilish Damon.

02.07.2010 - Oh, yes and then there is the long time favorite, Smallville This past week episode introduced the members of the Justice Society of America with Stargate SG 1’s Michael Shanks in the starring role as Carter Hall/Hawkman. If you missed it, try to catch it online it is a two- hour event written Glen Winters, who directed the first hour. Tom Welling directed the second hour. From Wikipedia:

Hawkman first appeared in Flash Comics #1 (1940), and was a featured character in that title throughout the 1940s. This Hawkman was Carter Hall, a reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian prince, Khufu, who had in the modern day discovered that the mysterious "ninth metal" could negate the effects of gravity and allow him to fly. He donned a costume with large wings to allow him to control his flight and became the crimefighter, Hawkman. An archaeologist by trade, Hall uses ancient weapons from the museum of which he was curator in his efforts.

Hawkman was a charter member of the Justice Society of America, beginning with All Star Comics #3 (Winter 1940). In issue #8 he became the JSA's chairman, a position he would hold until the end of the JSA's run in All Star Comics. He was the only member of the JSA to appear in every adventure during the Golden Age of comic books. He romanced his reincarnated bride, Shiera Sanders, who became the crimefighter Hawkgirl. His first three adventures were drawn by creator Dennis Neville (who modeled Hawkman's costume on the hawkmen characters in the Flash Gordon comic strip by Alex Raymond), then by Sheldon Moldoff, and later by Joe Kubert, who slightly redesigned his mask in Flash Comics # 85 (Jul 1947) and then, one year later, replaced the winged-hawk-like mask by a much simpler yellow cowl in Flash Comics #98 (Aug 1948).

I am one fan who would like to see more of Hawkman and possibly Hawkman in, hmm, let’s say a Smallville spinoff. To say that Smallville has developed a dark underbelly would be mild when compared to the darkness of the Apocalypse to come later in the series.

02.07.2010 – What if you were never born? This was the theme of the last episode of Supernatural, The Song Remains the Same, and where Dean and Sam are transported back to 1978 to save the lives of their parents. In it Anna the angel has escape hell, and is dead set on killing the Sam and Dean’s parents, Mary and John Winchester before the boys are born, during battle for their lives the Winchester boys learn to it is too late to stop their births because Mary is pregnant with Dean and john merges with the archangel Michael to save them all. As usual, Michael tells Dean that what will be will and that he will consent to be merge with Michael in the future and that there is no way around it.

This is all very biblical and appears to be based on God call to the reluctant, like Jonah who endured many hardships for refusing to do God’s Will.  As with Smallville there is an Apocalypse rising on Supernatural.

02.02.07.2010 – Some interesting information about Misha Collins who plays Castiel the angel, who dragged the terrified Dean from Hell, is a published poet with works in "The Columbia Poetry Review," "The California Quarterly" and other literary journals. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Before turning to acting, Collins worked as an intern at the White House during the Clinton Administration in the Office of Presidential Personnel. He later moved on to become a producer and copy writer for National Public Radio on a show called "Weekly Edition." After graduation, Collins traveled the world for a year, spending several months in monastic seclusion in a monastery in Tibet. He currently resides in Los Angeles in a house he built and designed himself.
