Thor: The Dark World Outclass Ironman 3 in Artistic Vision

Well, just when I began to think that Marvel Comics was losing its edge in movie making with the production of Iron Man 3 to which the film came off as more of an American’s wartime propaganda film than one for entertainment, they release a winner film like Thor: The Dark World. Sure in terms of profit, dollars, and cents are great to make when investing millions of dollars in the production one film, but artistic creativity merits some value also.

Thor: The Dark World is the squeal to the 2011 Kenneth Branagh film of Thor. In this film, Thor: The Dark World as directed by Alan Taylor and cam out on November 8. Now Thor (Chris Hemsworth) must enlist the help of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to battle Malekith the Accursed (Christopher Eccleston). He is the leader of a race of beings called the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim want to cast the universe, Earth and Asgard included, into darkness.

Malekith and his evil elves ere defeated eon ago by Thor grandfather and though dead. The powerful weapon they wanted to use to destroy everything is the Aether. Trapped inside Jane Foster the Aether awakens Malekith attacks Asgard where he badly wounded. However, the Agrarians have no time to rejoice because Thor and his team go off seeking the stop Malekith from destroying Earth.

After the Aether merges with Jane (Natalie Portman), Heimdall (Idris Elba), Asgard’s gatekeeper, cannot see her. Thor goes the Earth and returns to Asgard with Jane. She receives a chilly welcome from Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and enquiring looks from Sif (Jaimie Alexander), an Asgard warrior goddess.

Suddenly, Malekith and his army of dark elves and a being called the Kursed attack Asgard, and Thor soon learns that he cannot win the battle with Malekith without Loki

As all fans of Thor know, it is not a question of if Loki will betray Thor. It is more of a question of when and where Loki will betray him. From this point on in the movie, Loki steals the attention of the audience as we all watch his attempts to charm Jane and her friend, including Eric who he once as possessed.

An all too willing Loki awaits his moment. When Thor’s plan to destroy the Aether fails, in an act of what looks to Thor and Jane like a sacrificial gesture, Loki attacks the Kursed being, he is in turn impaled and his death appears to Thor and to Jane a noble one. Thor and Jane return to Earth and the city of Greenwich in England for the final show down with Malekith and his army of dark.

When Malekith arrives, the battle for the universe begins. Thor, Jane, Eric, and their two assistants do their upmost to dwarf Malekith invasion, and in the end, Thor kills Malekith off world and destroys the Aether with him. End of the movie? Nooo!

Loki‘s Reign.

Unbeknown to Thor and the other people of Asgard the trickier Loki has dethroned Odin. He appears as Odin to the people of Asgard, and where the aged king is, no one knows.

As for cinematography, the kingdom of Asgard maintained its otherworldly and storybook look as in the first Thor film. The dark worlds were welcoming and cold and appeared uninhabitable for most beings. Although destroy in the battle with Malekith, the rainbow bridge of Asgard looked dream like.

In all, Thor: the Dark World is the best Marvel’s film of the year. In addition, I, like many other viewers, would look to see a film arc featuring the Lady Sif as it star character. She is a little known film character but she made her appearance in the Marvel Comics books,  Journey Into Mystery #102 in1964. -- Evelyn F. Altheimer-Fain
