Having reviewed
the trailer for Gracepoint I
realized that it is an Americanized version of the British show Broadchurch. I then smelt
disaster for the fledging series. Now,
while I love the works of actor David Tennant, I did not like Broadchurch very
well as a television series. I thought it moved too slow for all of its
predictability. Although the series has won several British awards including
'best drama series', I believed, that I would have enjoyed Broadchurch more as
a 2-hour made for TV movie.
Now Fox has
picked up Gracepoint as a limited series (meaning there is a chance for a
second season if this first
one does well), and in spite of its new name , it
is still the former British made series, Broadchurch. However, for all the sameness in the trailer,
there are some changes. Fans of Tennant will immediately notice that he has
dropped his delightful Scottish accent for a American one, and supposedly there
were a few changes made to the old
series storyline that add some new dimension and intrigue that will lead the
series in a new direction. This strategy
worked well for the successful Canadian made series Being Human, which was based on the
British series of the same name.
Despite my pessimistic view of Gracepoint's future, it
will be good to see David Tennant on screen again. More than being known as the
tenth Doctor Who, Tennant is one the Royal
Shakespeare Company most renowned actor, On Gracepoint he has revised his
role as the detective in charge but as Detective Emmett Carver.
Storyline: a
young boy is found dead on a beach of a peaceful little California seaside town
and soon suspicions feeds the minds of the people and their secrets begin to
flow as Detective Carver and his partner Detective Ellie Miller (Anna Gunn)
expand their search to find the murderer.
