Syfy's Gender Switch Series

IDW Comic: Wynonna Earp

In the light of the Marvel's Comics revelation a few months back that Jane Foster was the new Thor.  It appears that the Syfy channel is following suit with a couple of new series in which female characters are in lead roles that previously were dominated by males.

The first of these series is Van Helsing and her bio is as follows:

Van Helsing centers on Vanessa Helsing, the daughter of famous vampire hunter and Dracula nemesis Abraham Van Helsing. She is resurrected five years in the future to find out that vampires have taken over the world and that she possesses unique power over them. She is humanity’s last hope to lead an offensive to take back what has been lost.
"Van Helsing represents a new mythology in sci-fi by
challenging traditional vampire rules," said Chad Oakes, Co-Chairman of Nomadic Pictures (Fargo, Hell on Wheels). "The series is unique in exploring a world completely dominated by vampires, while the human characters have to learn the importance of working together to ensure their survival."
The 13-episode series will commence with production in January 2016 for a Fall 2016 premiere. Neil LaBute (Your Friends & Neighbors, The Shape of Things) will serve as writer/showrunner on this new take on the Dracula myth. -- Syfy
The second series, Wynonna Earp, is a supernatural series based on another well known male character and her bio is as follows:

Based on the IDW Comic, Wynonna Earp follows Wyatt Earp's great granddaughter as she battles demons and other creatures. With her unique abilities, and a posse of dysfunctional allies, she's the only thing that can bring the paranormal to justice.
Melanie Scrofano (Damien) will star as Wynonna. Tim Rozon (Being Human, Instant Star) will play the legendary Doc Holliday and Shamier Anderson (Defiance, Constantine) will play the enigmatic Agent Dolls. -- Syfy
IDW Comic Description:

Redneck, trailer trash, drug-running vampires, bounty-hunting biker werewolves, immortal desperadoes, an ancient mummy hitman and the Egyptian Mafia: these are the kinds of perpetrators that covert U.S. Marshal Wynonna Earp hunts down on a regular basis. Created by writer Beau Smith, Wynonna Earp is the descendant of the famous lawman Wyatt Earp. As a member of the so-called Halloween Hunters’ or ‘Freak Finders.
This is also set for a 2016 debut.
