U.S.S. Discovery To Be Set Between The First And The Last Series

As announced back in May at the TCA, the main character of Discovery will be a woman. However, according to program creator, Bryan Fuller, she will not be the captain of the U.S.S. Discovery. What this means to the overall plot of the series is that she will be seen from the captain's point of view along with 5 other characters.

"The first 13 episodes will be serialized and play out almost like a novel, "with each episode being a chapter of that novel, and within that chapter there's a beginning, middle and end," Fuller said. He added, "We will have episodes that exist by themselves but are a part of a much bigger story."
In addition, and according Fuller, the new series will take place in the Prime Universe and about 10 years before Captain Kirk's five-year mission. The series is also the bridge between the first two series in the timeline, about a century after Captain Jonathan Archer's Star Trek: Enterprise (the prequel) and a decade before The Original Series.
