14 New Series of the Fantastic to Look Forward to Watching in 2017



Below are the Widescreen Online Review's choices of the most anticipated series ranging in several areas of the fantastic. 

ABC

STILL STAR-CROSSED: A period drama from Shondaland, picks up where the famous story of Romeo and Juliet ends, charting the treachery, palace intrigue and ill-fated romances of the Montagues and Capulets in the wake of the young lovers' tragic fate. The series is based on the book by Melinda Taub.

Still Star-Crossed stars Wade Briggs (Home and Away) as Benvolio Montague, Anthony Head as Lord Silvestro Capulet, Zuleikha Robinson as Lady Guiliana Capulet, Lashana Lynch as Rosaline, Ebonee Noel as Livia, Sterling Sulieman as Prince Escalus, Medalion Rahimi as Princess Isabella, Grant Bowler as Damiano Montague, Susan Wooldridge as Nurse, Torrance Coombs as Paris and Dan Hildebrand as Friar Lawrence.

TIME AFTER TIME: Based on the novel and movie Time After Time, executive producer/writer Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries, Scream franchise, Dawson's Creek) delivers a fantastical cat and mouse adventure through time when famed science fiction writer H.G. Wells is transported to modern day Manhattan in pursuit of Jack the Ripper. Once H.G. arrives in New York City, he finds a world he never thought possible and a young woman who captivates him.

Time After Time stars Freddie Stroma (Harry Potter films) as H.G. Wells, Josh Bowman (Revenge) as John Stevenson/Jack the Ripper, Genesis Rodriguez (Big Hero 6) as Jane and Regina Taylor (Dig) as Vanessa Anders.

AMC

THE TERROR: the series is set in 1847, when a Royal Naval expedition crew searching for the Northwest Passage is attacked by a mysterious predator that stalks the ships and their crew in a suspenseful and desperate game of survival.

THE CW

RIVERDALE : The  CW went way back in the past for Riverdale, their newest fall series that is based on the Archie Comics. The first of the Archie Comics originally made its debut  on December 22, 1941 in Pep Comics with the characters of Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, Kevin Keller, Josie, the Pussycats, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. While attempting to understand and grow within their personal relationships, as a team the main characters investigated crimes from the unexplained, horror, sci-fi, and mystery. The series premiere is Thursday, January 26, 2017.


FREEFORM

BEYOND: Holden, a young man who wakes up from a coma after 12 years, discovers new abilities that propel him into the middle of a dangerous conspiracy. Now Holden must try and figure out what happened to him during those 12 years, how to survive a world that changed while he was gone, and answer the question, why did this happen to him? The series premiere is Monday, January 2, 2017.




FX

MARVEL'S LEGION  :  follows the story of David Haller, a troubled young man who may be more than human. Since he was a teenager, David has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.


The series stars Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Jean Smart, Aubrey Plaza, Jeremie Harris, Katie Aselton, Amber Midthunder and Bill Irwin.

Noah Hawley serves as an Executive Producer along with Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb, Jim Chory, and John Cameron.

Legion will debut on FX February 8, 2017 and is produced by FX Productions and Marvel Television.

And as Dorothy navigates this dangerous world and uncovers her true destiny, we'll see there's no place like... Oz.

DC COMICS' POWERLESS:  NBC’s upcoming half-hour series Powerless has finally received a hard release date after being pushed back from this Fall: Thursday, February 2 at 8:30 p.m. Eastern. Up, up, and away! Or not.
“It’s a superhero world. We just live in it.” is the perspective of its lead character, Emily Locke (Vanessa Hudgens), who at the show’s outset starts work as the Director of Research & Development for Wayne Security. Yes, that Wayne. It’s a subsidiary of Wayne Enterprises that creates products that can help keep innocent people safe in a dangerous world full of supers, both heroic and villainous.

NETFLIX

MARVEL'S IRON FIST: Finn Jones in the lead role of Daniel Rand (Iron Fist). The hero fights against the criminal elements corrupting New York City with his master kung-fu skills and ability to summon the power of the fiery Iron Fist, which strikes opponents with superhuman impact. The show will reportedly pick up just as Rand returns to the Big Apple, after having gone missing from the city for several years. Iron Fist will premiere on Friday, March 17, 2017.

A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS: Based on the children’s novel series of same name by Lemony Snicket, the upcoming series will follow the orphaned Baudelaire siblings — Violet, Klaus and Sunny — who are sent to live with distant cousin Count Olaf, who plots to steal their inheritance. Once he loses guardianship of the children, he follows them to each subsequent housing placement, always wearing different disguises and attempting to take their fortune. Neil Patrick Harris, Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes will co-star in the eight episode season. The series premiere is Friday, January 13, 2017

MARVEL'S THE DEFENDERS: Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) — will join forces in this team-up series, also set to debut in 2017. Though specific details of the show haven’t been revealed, the miniseries event will follow the group of heroes as they are brought together to face their biggest threat yet.

BIG MOUTH Described as an edgy, surreal comedy, this 10-episode, half-hour animated series chronicles the teenaged adventures in puberty from real-life best friends Nick Kroll (Kroll Show) and Andrew Goldberg (Family Guy). Comedians Kroll and and John Mulaney will voice the central characters of Nick and Andrew, respectively. Maya Rudolph, Jason Mantzoukas, Jordan Peele, Fred Armisen, Jenny Slate and Jessi Klein are also featured in the voice cast. The show will premiere everywhere Netflix is available on June 18, 2017.
