Across the Universe : A Musical Love Story (Updated)

Hello,

Evelyn here,

I nearly missed a film that I believe will make musical history if not for its storyline than for the its musical score, which will send those of us who were coming to age in the mid 60s and early 70s on a trip down memory lane. This Friday, Sony Pictures and Revolution Studios' movie Across the Universe will open nationwide.

Across the Universe is a musical love story set to music of recording artists from the 60s. It is about of two star-crossed lovers, who struggle not to be torn apart by the social turbulent of their time. Of the music, the most noticeable group are the Beatles. The movie begins with the country in the midst of the Vietnam years, and at a time of anti-war protects, mini shirts, tall boots, free love, pot, and psychedelic drugs that appears to flow much too freely.

The 60s were also the time when the phrase, “mandatory draft” had developed a negative connotation, and when the hottest shows on television were American Bandstand, Star Trek, Ed Sullivan and a wild and wacky little band called, The Monkees. It was an anti-culture generations where to your utter dismays you discovered that you and your psychiatric shared the psychoanalyst.

It was the 60s and we loved it.

Though not religious in origin Across the Universe brings to mind such classic musicals as the off-Broadway, Godspel (later a movie), and Jesus Christ Superstar. Tommy and Hair appears to echo in there also. Cast includes Evan Rachel Wood, and Jim Sturgess. In theaters: Friday, September 14, 2007.  Check out the website there are some great music samples from the soundtrack posted.

Evelyn saying, “Good Night.”
