The Whitney Houston Biopic Airs this Saturday January 17, 2015 on Lifetime

Yaya DaCosta
Whitney Houston was a great artist who rose to fame like a rocket and fell back down in a torrid of depression and drug addiction that eventually claimed her life. Although, fans of Whitney Houston will probably enjoy Angela Bassett directorial portrayal of the singer’s life, it has been reported that many members of the Houston family are in opposition of the making of the film.

Deborah Cox is the amazing vocal singer singing as Whitney Houston while Yaya DaCosta is noticeably struggling to lip sync along. Bassett had stated that the film is more about Houston’s career than her personal life. Yet, how can she not add aspects of the late singer personal life when it had such a profound effect on her career during much of her final years.

One must remember that Angela Bassett played Tina Turner in the successful 1993 film What's Love Got to Do with It. Therefore, Bassett knows what it means to portray a great female entertainer, whose fall from stardom was due to a bad personal life. And it could be for this reason that she has taken on the task of bringing Houston’s tragic story to the screen. However, unlike Tina Turner, who found the strength and the support to rise again, Whitney Houston lost her struggle to do so to drugs on February 11, 2012.

The Lifetime TV movie, ‘Whitney’ airs this Saturday January 17 at 8/7c, and stars Yaya DaCosta in the title role and Arlen Escarpeta as Bobby Brown.
