Widescreen Online Review Presents: The Brides, an ABC New Series

Goran Višnjić
Recently Deadline reported that ABC is going to air a new series called the Brides with stars Goran Višnjić as Count Dracula.  According to the series description, The Brides is a sexy contemporary retelling of Dracula in which the three brides of Dracula emerge from their subservient and almost troll-like positions under Dracula’s centuries-old dominance to become powerful female leads after leaving ‘dear old Drac’ for dead, no doubt, after his battle with the Harkers and Van Helsing. The series will rely heavily on horror elements and is a vampire primetime soap opera about the empowerment of immortal women and the actions they take to maintain their wealth, prestige, legacy and their non-traditional family. While the actress to play the role of Renée has not been announced, Gina Torres and Katherine Reis have landed the roles of Cleo and Reis,

Not to be a spoilsport, however, it must be pointed out that the chances of  As the NBC series, Dracula (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) comes to mind.  It too was a contemporary retelling the Bram Stoker's Dracula. However, the story of Dracula was and is one so well told over and over again that it was hard for the 2013 series to garner an audience.
The Brides surviving as a long-run series or even surviving for an entire series are questionable.

As a long time fan of the Dracula tales in all its incarnations, it will be most interesting to see how The Brides fare in this age of here today and gone tomorrow short-lived TV series where audiences have more media outlets to choose between broadcast TV, cable TV, Smart TV, and the internet as mediums for watching their favorite series.
